Radio One’s Big Weekend is coming tae Glasgow!
….and it only took thirty minutes to sell 50,000 tickets.
The Big Weekend is an annual music festival spreading over a glorious weekend but to add to the allure – it’s free!
This year 60,000 people are going to enjoy the two day festival in the music capital’s Glasgow Green Park.
Some big names in the past have included My Chemical Romance, Arctic Monkeys and the Foo Fighters.
Similar to the past, there will be three stages: the main stage, an In New Music We Trust tent and BBC Introducing stage.
This is the second time the festival has come to Scotland, in 2006 it came to Camperdown Park, Dundee.
The festival will be running for its 11th year and is Europe’s biggest free musical event.
There are also another free music event on the Friday at George Square where Radio One presenters will be joined by the world’s finest DJs.
As for the weekend, the full line-up will only be announced at the end of April (Boo!). However my predictions so far include The Arctic Monkeys and the Kaiser Chiefs. Bets anyone?
So far Rita Ora, Paolo Nutini and Pharrell have been announced to play in front of Glasgow.
Radio One DJ Nick Grimshaw has said: “There is a rule that the further north you go, the more fun the gig will be so I’m psyched to be in Scotland this year.”
I can happily say I have tickets for both days so watch this space for reviews. My flatmate bagged two tickets for Saturday and I got Sunday. It truly was teamwork at its best!
50% per cent of tickets were put aside for those living in Glasgow and 45% were reserved for those living in the rest of Scotland. The remaining five per cent went to the rest of the UK.
Radio One Academy also aims to hold an event in the lead up for 16 to 19 year olds to become inspired through radio shows, masterclasses and Q&A’s. This will run from the 10th to the 16th of May.
